HODGE’S WORK REFLECTS HER PERSONAL RESPONSE TO PLACE AND EXPERIENCE.
Wendy Cretella-Hodge
Cretella-Hodge’s work is driven by a visceral response to nature and life experience. Her expressive paintings explore narratives of relationships, sense of place and moments in time through the language of paint. Witnessing the light on a facade, a poetic figural gesture or lyrical tree limbs, these serve as a departure points for her paintings. She is a process painter at heart who aims to accelerate the time between thought and action, while listening to the painting’s voice. Drawn to the physicality of the paint and color as light, she works with a variety of tools and layers, exploring the richness of color relationships through gestural paint application. Her paintings balance the ambiguous line between direct observation of the subject with pleasure of discovery, surrendering to a place where the brush and the heart are one. A retired high school art teacher with a BFA in painting, her work is exhibited widely and in numerous private collections.
