INTERSPECIES COLLABORATION WITH HONEYBEES ILLUMINATING ECOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE AMID CLIMATE CRISIS.
Susan Medyn
Susan Medyn creates artwork in collaboration with honeybees, working alongside them in her apiaries. She begins each piece by introducing simple structures, drawings, or natural materials into an active hive, then steps back and allows the bees to respond. As the colony builds, alters, or abandons parts of the work, wax and honeycomb record the bees’ decisions, movements, and environmental conditions. The process is slow, unpredictable, and shaped by weather, seasonal changes, and the health of the hive.
Her work brings attention to pollinator decline and the accelerating climate crisis through close observation and care. By treating the bees as collaborators, Medyn’s practice reflects a belief that creativity, resilience, and survival are shared across species, and that listening to the natural world is an essential act of connection and responsibility.
