Kadie Salfi
Kadie Salfi explores the tensions between joy, beauty, destruction, and desire. From early silkscreens of bubblegum-hued bomber planes to Arabian camels printed in crude oil, her work offers incisive social commentary with a stylish, sly sensibility.
Salfi’s practice is a dialogue between the weight of environmental issues and the lightness found in personal history. This duality allows her to maintain balance—both in her heart and in the studio. To explore these lighter themes, she frequently returns to the iconic image of the ballerina; its inherent grace, power, and femininity serve as a counterpoint to her more political works. She also captures the thrill of vintage racecars—objects of personal desire that represent a different kind of momentum.
A recurring theme is perspective, explored both conceptually and physically. Her pieces are designed to transform as the viewer moves toward them; by employing dots, halftones, and shifts in scale, she invites the viewer to discover new layers of meaning. In her recent series, Sweet Tender Love, Salfi delves into her family history, translating an intimate narrative into a universal reflection on love and longing.
Raised in New England and the Bay Area, Salfi received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She spent two years at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, printing editions for icons including Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, and Vija Celmins. Now based in Little Compton, RI, Salfi has exhibited extensively at venues such as A.I.R. Gallery, the Arnot Art Museum, and Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art. Her work and practice have been featured in the eCORNELL Keynote Series, Artscope, Of Note Magazine, City Limits, Out of Bounds Radio, The Cornell Daily Sun, and Chapter89 Magazine.
