Heather Stivison is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and drawing. Her artworks have been exhibited in museums, universities, and galleries across the United States and in juried shows in Europe and Asia.
She creates her work in Hatch Street Studios, New Bedford, MA—a large bright studio filled with found objects and bits of nature that continually inspire her. She gathers these objects as a form of “visual harvesting” that feeds her creative practice.
Stivison also is a published book author and a contributing art critic for Artscope Magazine. She loves the art of writing, and is a constant reader of literature, nonfiction and poetry. These things influence the direction her art takes.
Many of her acrylic and oil paintings reflect a deep love of the environment. Colors, forms, and overall mark-making fascinate her. As an intuitive painter, she responds to the paint itself more than rigidly adhering to any preconceived plan. Each of her paintings is an exploration.
Much of her work is formed by layering of color and pattern. She often creates subtle and gentle color transitions, and then adds ethereal linework that floats on her mysterious surfaces of color. These delicate lines are echoes of her first love—drawing in graphite. She finds the act of drawing, whether in detailed realistic works or more gestural ones, a meditative practice.
Stivison is a former museum director, former president of both the New Jersey Association of Museums, and the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums. She holds an MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She is represented by Pleiades Gallery in New York City.
