Dot Bergen Art

Dot Bergen is a contemporary, abstract encaustic artist living in the rural, coastal community of Little Compton, RI. The natural world is the common thread that unites her work. Formally trained as a scientist, she leverages her advanced degrees in Invertebrate Zoology and Marine Ecology to inform her point of view. Her work references phenomena such as fossilization, mineralization, growth, cellular movement and the marine environment. Her current series include ‘Mental Time Travel’, which explores forgotten memories, and ‘Marginalized Communities’ sculpture which explores the value of LGBTQ and Immigrant communities.

Encaustics is the art of painting with beeswax and damar resin. Solid at room temperature, this medium requires melting prior to painting. Finely ground pigments can be added to the medium resulting in ‘encaustic paint’. Once a layer is painted, heat fusing is required before an additional layer of paint can be added. Dot often incorporates natural fibers into the encaustic paint, creating 3-dimensional paintings and sculptures. Further, she incorporates fresco into her painting process, rendering a look of antiquity to the paintings.

Dot received a BS in Biology from the University of Massachusetts in 1985, an MS in Marine Ecology from San Diego State University in 1992, and a PhD in Invertebrate Zoology from University of New Hampshire in 1996. Her work has been exhibited in Museums and Galleries throughout New England and beyond, including The Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; Salmagundi Club, NYC, NY; Spring Bull Gallery, Newport, RI; Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI; Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA and the Annemarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, A Smithsonian Institution, MD. Her work is in numerous private collections. She is an exhibiting member of The Art Gallery (TAG), Boston, MA and at Imago Foundation for the Arts, Warren, RI. Her studio/gallery is located in Little Compton, RI.
