David Poyant
David Poyant is a contemporary embroidery artist whose work redefines thread as both drawing and narrative. Working entirely by hand, one stitch at a time, Poyant creates richly detailed, painterly compositions that explore memory, imagination, nature, and quiet human moments. His practice is rooted in patience, storytelling, and the belief that slow craftsmanship holds emotional power in a fast digital world.
After spending decades in the shoe repair and orthotics industry, Poyant began his artistic career later in life, transforming a lifelong fascination with sewing—passed down from his mother—into a fully realized fine-art practice. His distinctive style, often referred to as “thread painting,” blends traditional embroidery with contemporary composition, allowing each piece to emerge organically through thousands of individual stitches.
Poyant’s work has been exhibited widely in national and international shows and is held in both private and permanent collections. He has shown at the New Bedford Art Museum, Gallery X, The Wamsutta Club, Soco Art Labs, and The Narrows Center for the Arts. Internationally, his work has appeared in Venice, Saint Paul de Vence, and Nice, France. His exhibitions span galleries, museums, and juried fairs across the U.S. and Europe.
His recent awards include the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant, the International Prize Côte d’Azur in Nice, France, Protagonist of Contemporary Art Award on the French Riviera, Exhibizone Grand Prize, and First Place at the Venu Art Awards. His work has been featured in Artsy Shark, the Standard Times, New Bedford Light, and on Art Matters.
Based in coastal Massachusetts, Poyant draws inspiration from maritime culture, forests, childhood memories, and imagined worlds. Through every thread, he tells stories of resilience, nostalgia, wonder, and the enduring beauty of handmade art.
