March Members’ Gathering: A special presentation by artist Kat Knutsen.

March Members’ Gathering

Join us at Dedee Shattuck Gallery on Thursday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m., for a very special presentation by artist Kat Knutsen. Kat was among a select group of 148 artists from all over the world who traveled to Gdansk, Poland to work on the Oscar-nominated film, Loving Vincent.

Loving Vincent is an animated film that delves into the life and controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh. It is based on some 800 letters he wrote and uses more than 120 of his masterpiece paintings to make the film come alive. Kat and the other selected artists used Van Gogh’s signature impasto technique to paint thousands of individual oil paintings. The filmmakers consulted with the Van Gogh Museum in an effort to find the correct tools, paints and colors for the artists. In her months in the Gdansk studios, Kat created more than 80 oil paintings that became individual frames for the animation. She will share her fascinating experience through slides and stories, and will offer a live demo at our March members’ meeting.

Vincent wrote in his last letter: “Well, the truth is, we cannot speak other than by our paintings”

That is what the filmmakers said they were doing: “letting his paintings tell the story of what the painter had inside his heart, and ultimately, what happened to him.'”
