Mark your calendar for this month’s members’ gathering: Thursday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m., at the Buzzards Bay Brewing, 98 Horseneck Rd, Westport, MA 02790. We will begin the evening with our member-favorite potluck style dinner, followed by the program starting at 7:00 p.m.

This month’s Members’ Gathering will offer double the excitement, with a fascinating presentation by TWO internationally known ceramic artists Chris Gustin and Nancy Train Smith. Chris and Nancy will talk about their work in context of their relationship and ongoing conversations that feed both their work and ideas in a presentation they call A Thirty-Year Dialogue. |

The presentation is inspired by their large-scale exhibition, The Fluidity of Perception, currently on view at Pensacola State College. Their two bodies of work in this exhibition are simply the most recent iteration of a dialogue that they have been having for 30 years regarding sculptural form. |

|
Moving from the vessel format as a means of expressing human emotion, Chris is exploring the possibilities of abstraction in large scale ceramic form. Nancy, having dealt with narrative themes in both painting and ceramics, is exploring the synthesis of her experience using the wall to explore three-dimensional collage. Selections from the exhibition will be on view at Dedee Shattuck Gallery from June 27th - July 13th.

Chris Gustin is an explorer of forms, a painter with fire and glazes, and a master of his materials. He takes inspiration from historical, utilitarian pottery as well as the subtleties of the human form. His work ranges from functional wares to exquisite tiles to singularly expressive works of art. |

|
Chris studied ceramics at the University of California, Irvine with John Mason before earning his BFA at Kansas City Art Institute, and an MFA at NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He has taught at Parson’s School of Design, the Program in Artisanry at Boston University, and at the University of Massachusetts. In addition to his teaching and studio practice, Gustin is one of the Founders of the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, an artist residency program in Maine.

Nancy Train Smith uses “abstracted” forms to depict her perception of the natural world. Some of you may remember her work Migration, a site-specific installation of 129 ceramic fish sculpture on the Slocum River Reserve 2009-2010. Or you may have seen other iterations of Nancy’s stunning ceramic fish at the New Bedford Whaling Museum or the Fuller Craft Museum. |

Nancy, who is both a painter and a ceramic sculptor. earned her B.A. in Art History from Wellesley College and furthered her studies in the four-year diploma program of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Nancy has been a visiting artist and teacher at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO, the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Good Hope Studio in Trelawney, Jamaica.
