Happy New Year, South Coast Artists! I hope all went well for you during this always crazy time of year. I see it as a life-getting-in-the-way interruption adding to our experiences, filling that well with inspiration and motivation, even if we’re not consciously aware of it. Like that old saying, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. Our creations are a result or even a record of that journey. What I said exactly one year ago still goes: In the background, running SCA, is a group of unstoppable volunteers creating their own art while being selflessly dedicated to SCA’s cause. If you feel like you’re missing out on something and want to be more involved in this community, you’ll find a sign up form for volunteering on our website. Did you hit the reset button for new goals, new attitudes, new art? I’m a fan of getting out of that comfort zone and challenge you to do so, too. Here at SCA, plans for 2025 have been in motion well before the new year. 2024 saw us leave our own comfort zone and set the bar quite high - a challenge we welcome in 2025. Speakers, venues, and art jurors are being lined up for our gatherings and exhibits and special events. If the past informs the future, we’ll have new members joining us - actually, this is already happening. If you haven’t yet, now is always a good time to renew your membership. Where else can forty bucks give an artist a soul-filling experience for an entire year? I’ve talked about community. We as artists, sharing our creations, are bound by that common goal, and here in our little corner, that has created a unique, meaningful community right out of thin air. Did you know you had that kind of power? I encourage you to use all of SCA’s resources on our website to strengthen our community and further your journey. Okay, enough of that existential stuff. I’m looking forward to what this year brings (artistically speaking). First off will be a special Zoom meeting on January 16th for those of you serious about being on the Open Studio Tours this summer. As always, there will be an art contest exclusively for those on the Tours, with a juror and prizes. Our mostly monthly gatherings fall on the third Thursday of the month. Note that, due to popular demand, our gatherings will now start at 6:00pm rather than 6:30 for the pot-luck/socializing portion of the evening. I guess we all like each other! The meeting portion will still start at 7:00pm, as usual. May will find us at Imago Gallery in Warren, RI for our 7th annual SCA Members’ Invitational. This will be the second year where we have a juror and prizes. Check out our calendar for upcoming events. As always, we welcome suggestions for speakers, jurors, gathering locations, exhibit locations, instructional events, or any other bright ideas. Here’s to another meaningful journey around the sun!
