Free Artist Demonstrations This Weekend

A series of fascinating and fun art demonstrations will occur on Saturday and Sunday, November 23rd and 24th as part of South Coast Artists ongoing educational mission. The demonstrations, which are free and open to the public, will take place on the fourth floor, Studio 412, of Hatch Street Studios, 88 Hatch Street, New Bedford, MA.

These demonstrations are part of a South Coast Artists collaborations with the Hatch Street Fall 2024 Open Studio event, which takes place throughout the buildings that weekend. DEMONSTRATION SCHEDULE:

Saturday, November 23rd:

12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Genevieve Hunt: Watercolor Techniques.

Genevieve Hunt will demonstrate how to paint three types of washes that form the basis of skies, water and landscapes. Visitors will learn about composition, aerial perspective and value placement. She will demonstrate how to paint a dramatic sunset and a stormy sky over land and water.

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Kat Knutsen: Figure Drawing in Charcoal.

Kat Knutsen will demonstrate how she designs figurative compositions. Visitors will learn how she plans out the framing of the drawing and how she uses soft vine charcoal with newsprint to create a narrative scene. The results are an expressive multifigure drawing that can be used as a template for a painting.

2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Peter Dickison: Painting Luminous Skies.

Peter Dickison will use olil paints to demonstrate his process for creating a painting of a luminous sky with clouds.

3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
JP Powel: Creating Imaginative Paintings

JP Powel will demonstrate his unique oil sketching technique for producing paintings inspired from imagination, memory, photographs or pen and ink sketches in his notebooks all the while inviting a spirited dialogue with lookers on.

Sunday, November 24th:

11:00 - 1:00 p.m.
JP Powel: Creating Imaginative Paintings

12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Kim Barry: Wet into Wet Oil Painting.

Kim Barry will demonstrate how she works from observation of still-life objects using a warm underpainting to lay out her composition and then further develop her painting with an expressive application of brushwork.

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Kit Schaffer: White Line Printing.

Kitt Shaffer will demonstrate the low-tech process of white line printing, also known as Provincetown printing, using watercolors and a carved wooden block.

2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Robin Nunes: Painting with a Knife.

Robin Nunes will demonstrate her personal and playful approach to painting with a palette knife. Visitors will see how this technique allows her to add an abundance of texture and a whimsical touch to her paintings.

South Coast Artists, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, educates, represents, and supports artists living and working in the coastal towns of Tiverton and Little Compton, RI, and Westport and Dartmouth, MA. Each summer SCA sponsors studio tours and this year the 22nd annual SCA Open Studio Tour takes place on the weekends of July 19-20 and August 16-17. SCA also provides free educational events and grants for emerging artists.
